This weeks color grading palette “The Black Panther Color Grading Palette” is taken from The Black Panther and I dedicate this article to my longtime friend who happens to be a great fan of The Black Panther, his name is Michel Drenthe film Director at Caribbean Filmcom in the tropical island of Curacao.
Despite its success the movie met with a lot of criticism. Then again, many great classics such as The Good The bad and The Ugly and films like Scarface all met with tremendous criticism when first released but over time they turned into timeless masterpieces.
Produced by Marvel Studios Kevin Feige and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures The Black Panthers stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa / Black Panther, together with Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.
Color Palettes are great and often used for filming (set designs), videos and even photography. When used in set design they are also great to use later in post production color correction and color grading.

“THE BLACK PANTHER COLOR PALETTE”
As many movies do The Black Panthers uses different color palettes for different scenes. I picked the scene from the cover photo and extracted the color palette.
Even though this movie is considered A BLOCKBUSTER, the color look is totally different from what is called the modern ‘Blockbuster Look’ (also referred to as the Teal and Orange look). How ever it does share the beautiful high contrast and the accentuated skin-tones, but notice that thid scene for instance is very colorful. Then again, other scenes in The Black Panther do use the Orange / Teal look.

High contrast and vibrant colors tell a modern story but still with same nature involved. The red and Orange are for

GREAT LOOKING SKIN-TONES
Once again, good looking skin tones are always very appealing to the eyes, even though this color palette does not use the Teal and Orange Color technique, the skin tones in this Color Palette are just as vibrant as in The Blockbuster color palette. They are still very pleasing to the eyes.
ADJUSTING A COLOR PALETTE
When using color palettes, you can always adjust the Saturation, Brightness and Saturation but NOT the hue.
For a Di colorist its great working with pallets especially when they where used during set design, because in the color correction phase the colorist can pull up the palette and adjust accordingly.

COLOR PALETTES Tell a story and are very useful for getting all your colors great and matching. After all, every color tells a story. Di colorists love working with palettes for color correcting and color grading. I have seen many cinematographers, producers and directors work with their own custom made color pallets to support the story being told.
Great for using in filming, videos and photography.
